The arms of the Fleming family appear alongside several others on the north side of the Bargate in Southampton. They were added to the building early in the eighteenth century. Today the arms are rather indistinct, but in the mid-1980s they were clear and vivid as this photograph shows. The shields were last repainted in 1998. (Photo: Robert Barrett)
