Gad Hill

Gad Hill (b.abt.1812 - 1879) was a lessee of the Estate and landlord of the Fleming Arms public house at Binstead.

He was born in Camberwell. In 1836 he married Abigail Stroud, at Portsea[1]. Gad was working as a gardener at the time of their daughter Abigail's christening in 1838 at Mapperton in Dorset[2]. Their son Gad Stroud Hill was christened in 1841 at Lyndhurst in Hampshire[3], by which time the family were living at Goose Green, Lyndhurst[4].

They has moved to the Isle of Wight by 1851, when they were living at Fernhill Farm at Arreton; Gad was a 'gardener's labourer'[5]. Gad's mother Jane died in 1858 aged 72. In 1859 their daughter Abigail died, aged 21.

By 1861 Gad Hill was landlord of the Fleming Arms at Binstead[6]. On 6 July 1862 he took a long lease of the Fleming Arms[7].

On the 7 Nov 1862, their son Gad Stroud Hill married Louisa Rhoda Vanner, daughter of Thomas Vanner (the brother of Abraham Vanner). The marriage was a short one as Gad Stroud Hill died in March 1869, aged 27.

Gad Hill senior died in 1879 at the age of 68. His wife Abigail died in 1880, aged 70.

Gad Stroud Hill's widow Louisa Rhoda Hill remarried in 1876 to James R Williams (d.1892), who became the landlord of the Fleming Arms[8].

  5. Gad is aged 39m Gardener's Lab born Camberwell. His wife Abigail is 42 born Beaminster. Gad Stroud is 9, born Lyndhurst. Also living with them is his mother Jane a widow age 78 born Camberwell. The 1851 census of Netherbury Dorset, has, William Stroud, age 77, a gardener, born Netherbury and his wife Rosanna age 70, born. Slapton? And Abigail Stroud age12, 'great niece'? Born Mapperton.

  8. They had three children: Rose Maud born 1877, Rachel Jane born 1878, and James Charles born 1882. The 1881 census shows the family are still at the Fleming Arms Binsted. James Williams age 48 born Hereford a Licensed Victualler, Louisa K his wife, and daughters, Rose Maud and Rachel Jane. January 10th 1884, Louisa Rhoda father Thomas died <ref> In his Will dated 9 March.1876, proved.18 June 1884 Louisa Rhoda (Williams wife of James Williams) called Hill in the will, widow, of the Fleming Arms', Binstead Isle of Wight, the daughter; one of the executors.he had a personal Estate of £1,007, 19s. 8d his widow and others were named. The 1891 census shows the family of five still at Binstead Rd, Public House, with the addition of Amy Weeks age 16 a servant born Ryde. James died age 61 in 1892. In 1915 Louisa, Rhoda died age 74.</li></ol></ref>
