Help:Footnotes
From The Muniment Room, a resource for social history, family history, and local history.
To insert a numbered reference/footnote at the bottom of a page, type <ref></ref> at the insertion point of the citation, and then write the text of the footnote between the <ref></ref> tags. For example:
- "... The centre gate consists of handsome iron scroll work."<ref>The Isle of Wight County Press, 6 July 1918</ref>
This is what is produced (note that the reference numbers in blue are automatically generated):
- "The centre gate consists of handsome iron scroll work."[1]
Then the following is placed in a 'References' or 'Footnotes' section on the page:
- <references/>
This is what it produces (note that the list numbers are automatically generated):
- ↑ The Isle of Wight County Press, 6 July 1918
Clicking on the reference number causes the screen display to scroll down to that reference number in the 'References' or 'Footnotes' section.
For an example of footnotes, see The War Shrines.
