In Hand
From The Muniment Room, a resource for social history, family history, and local history.
In Hand is a term that distinguished any properties that were held by the Estate and not rented or leased to a third party. Often in hand properties formed part of the 'demesne' of the lord of the manor. If a cottage is marked as 'In Hand', then it was a 'tied cottage' and an estate worker would normally have occupation.
