James Hutchings

James Hutchings (b.abt.1814) was landlord of the Fleming Arms Inn at Binstead, as well as being a prolific builder on the Estate at Binstead and Wootton Bridge, and lessee of the Ashlake Brickyard.
He married Elizabeth Saunders, daughter of the Binstead blacksmith Isaac Saunders.
In 1850 he leased 'The Orchard' at Binstead[1], which he mortgaged the same year[2]. From 1853 to 1864 he leased Ashlake Brickyard [3]. He leased additional land and a storehouse at Ashlake in 1860[4]. He leased a house and carpenter's shop at Binstead in 1861[5]. In 1853, he appears to have sought to lease Wootton Mill[6].
In 1853, an acre of ground he had taken for building, was requested to be returned to 'Mew'[7].

1861 census Ryde I O W Binstead Private House[8] James Hutchings was living there he was a Builder Employing 16 Men 8 Boys, also with him was wife Elizabeth and James W, age18 a Carpenter.
